Fundación TEKNIKER is a private non-profit Research Institution, founded in 1982. TEKNIKER has 242 employees, most of them Engineers and Doctors, and a Turnover of 20,5 M€ (year 2010).  The main research areas are: Precision engineering and mechatronics, Manufacturing technologies, Production engineering and automation and Surface engineering. TEKNIKER is linked to different European associations related to Manufacturing and Surface Engineering as EFFRA, EMIRACLE, Virtual Tribological Institute, European Platform EUMAT (coordinating the modelling group), E-Surf Networks for surface treatments development. The research areas that are aligned with MUSIC are: Tribology unit: Research group has a relevant knowledge in modelling wear, corrosion, thermal fatigue, abrasion, adhesion mechanisms as well as surface treatments, lubricants, lifecycle analysis and modelling energy. Manufacturing Processes group that has as core research activities: Machining, Ultrasonic and Laser technologies supported by the Modelling, Simulation and surface integrity analysis; Production Engineering and Automation, specialised in process control, monitoring and  in-line NDT automation and cognitive systems.

The role from TEKNIKER in this project cover the followings aspects:

a) Study the relationship between component properties with the casting and injection moulding process, machining and coating process parameters;

b) Die/mould durability and lubrication performance including demoulding process;

c) Post Casting operations modelling (gating and machining) modelling the stress/strain from casting to machining process;

d) In-line quality control (3D vision to control the deformation and displacement of the die), non-destructive analysis (X-Ray, ultrasonic, multi-spectral techniques) and link with process control and engineering;

e) Application of machine learning and optimization techniques to create the cognitive system that will be introduced in the control loop.

Dr. Amaya Igartua, In the Company since 1988. PhD Research Project Manager. Head of the Tribology Unit. Coordinator of 3 European and 10 National projects, and participating in more than 18 European and 20 National Projects. Author of more than 100 papers. Keywords: Tribology, surface treatments, coatings, light materials, mechanical, corrosion properties, non-destructive analysis, residual stress, lifecycle analysis & environmental impact. Dr. Amaya Igartua will be coordinator from TEKNIKER activity.

Role in the project: Coordination of IK4-TEKNIKER activity and responsible for wear modeling in the project.

Dr. Marcello Conte, is working in IK4-TEKNIKER since 2008. He presented the European PhD in Mechanics in 2009 at  Polytechnic University of Turin. He is expert in the field of Polymer Tribology and Sealing Systems, with more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, he received the STLE Frank B Award in 2012. He has experience in tribological test rigs and devices holding 3 patents. He is titular of the excellence course of “Polymer Tribology and sealing systems” at the Polytechnic University of Turin. Member of the scientific committees of the WIT congresses “Contact and Surface” and “Tribology and Design”, and of the Italian Association of Tribology (AIT), he is also co-leader of the Work Group 1 about modelling of the EuMat Platform.

Role in the project: Support in modelling issues, testing bench construction and design of experiments.

Borja Zabala holds a M.Sc in Mechanical Engineering and design by the Basque Country University (2013). He is making the Doctoral Thesis within the Music Project, modeling the wear of the plastic injection and aluminium die casting molds.

Role in the project: Is involved in several tasks related with the experimental and  modeling of the wear of the molds and assisting the sensors implementation in MAIER.

Ramon Arana

Physicist, after several years working in machine tool industry, he has been working in research activities for more than 20 years. His research focus is automation and monitoring, having participated in several European projects in this field: OPTIMA, KOBAS, MEDECOTHER, SIMON, IPROMS, MANTYS, MELD4PRODE, POWER-OM etc.

Role in the project: Sensing methods and measurable criteria using vision and sensors for judging the quality of the parts on PIM process.

Francesco Pagano

Postgraduate  master in Engineering of Advanced Materials. He has been working in the Politecnico of Turin in 2009, in a project related with Tribology of seals and since then he is working for TEKNIKER in Minilubes project about Tribology and tribocorrosion of ionic liquids, and now in MUSIC Project in Tribology of moulds.

Role in the project: His role in the project is to verify experimentally the tribological interaction of the materials and the effect of the lubricants on the resistance of the mould.

Roberto Gonzalez has over 10 years of experience in developing projects within the ICT sector. He is an expert in Microsoft technologies, interoperability and integration of systems and service development.

Currently he is responsible for the manufacturing line-of-business software applications within the Intelligent Information Systems Unit in Tekniker.
